Turkey attracts 44.6 million travelers last year


(MENAFN) Turkey welcomed an amount of 44.6 million foreign travelers last year, a surge of 80.3 percent on a yearly basis, in line with official numbers issued on Tuesday.

The number almost amounted to the pre-virus rate of 45 million last year, the Culture and Tourism Ministry data indicated.

Istanbul, Turkey’s most famous city and its biggest by population, was the highest attraction for foreign visitors, drawing over 16 million tourists.

It was followed by the resort city of Antalya with 12.8 million travelers, whereas Edirne, a city in northwestern Turkey in the boarders of Bulgaria and Greece, attracted 4.6 million tourists.

At 5.7 million, Germans constituted in 12.7 percent of all travelers, then came Russians at 5.2 million, Britons at 3.3 million, Bulgarians at 2.9 million, as well as Iranians at 2.3 million.

If Turkish citizens living abroad are involved to the numbers, then last year’s number surges to 51.4 million, marginally lower than 51.9 million in 2019.
