NATO pledges Ukraine additional heavy weapons

(MENAFN) On Saturday, Jens Stoltenberg, secretary general of NATO, claimed that Ukraine is soon going to get additional "heavy warfare equipment" from the West. Germany is being pushed to follow the United Kingdom's lead after it previously promised the nation tanks. On Friday, a "contact group" for arming Ukraine, chaired by the United States, would convene.

Days after Ukrainian forces were defeated by Russian forces in the strategically significant Donbass town of Soledar, Stoltenberg stated to Germany's Handelsblatt newspaper on Sunday, "we are in a crucial phase of the war.” Noting that “we are experiencing heavy fighting,” the NATO chief continued. “It is therefore important that we equip Ukraine with the weapons it needs to be able to win.”

The equipment that NATO's biggest states have agreed to provide to Ukraine has dramatically increased in recent weeks. Earlier this month, the United States, France, and Germany all stated that they would provide infantry combat vehicles to the Ukrainian military. On Saturday, the United Kingdom formally announced that it would supply fourteen Challenger 2 main battle tanks.
