Egypt Retrieves Artifact From US In 'Historic' Event

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, Jan 2 (KUNA) -- Egypt on Monday reclaimed from the US an artifact known as the 'Green Coffin,' in an event described as 'historic' culmination of diligent efforts aiming to retrieve an integral part of Cairo's rich history.
The Coffin lid is of exceptional size, more than three meters long, and is made of wood covered with hieroglyphic inscriptions, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry told a joint press conference with Minister of tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Essa.
It represents a 'successful' effort towards 'restoring Egypt's civilizational heritage,' besides being a 'new chapter' in foreign policy success, added the Shoukry.
The ancient wooden sarcophagus, which was on display at the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences, was returned to Egypt after US authorities determined it was looted years ago, according to Egyptian officials. (end)
