Ukraine will increase transit costs for Russian oil to EU

(MENAFN) On Monday, Russian oil exporter Transneft said on its website that Ukraine is going to increase transit taxes for Russian oil traveling through its territory via the Druzhba pipeline to the European Union beginning on January 1.

Kiev is anticipated to raise the cost of shipping oil to Hungary and Slovakia by euro2.10 a ton, to euro13.60 (USD13.90), for a total rise of 18.3 percent.

According to a letter from Ukrtransnafta, which runs the country's network of oil pipelines, Bloomberg reported in November that Ukraine was considering raising the transit fees it charges Russian oil companies beginning in 2019. The "continued destruction of Ukrainian energy infrastructure," which has led to "a significant shortage of electricity, an increase in its costs, a shortage of fuel, and spare parts," was cited by the Ukrainian operator as the reason for the price increase.

Igor Demin, a spokesman for Transneft, told the Russian media that the corporation had received and was reviewing the letter. Fees for the passage of oil via Ukraine have already doubled this year. According to reports, the most recent rise in April raised the overall increase to 51 percent annually.
