Moscow weighs in on likelihood of New Year's ceasefire with Kiev

(MENAFN) Russia is not considering a New Year's or Christmas truce in Ukraine since Kiev has not made any such suggestions, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday.

Talking to reporters, Peskov was questioned if Moscow would be open to a holiday truce and if Russian authorities would agree to one if an offer came from the Ukrainian side. “No, no proposals have been received from anyone,” responded Peskov, highlighting that “such a topic is not on the agenda.”

Meanwhile, a Ukrainian army spokesman, Aleksey Gromov, responded to a similar query on Friday by saying he would be opposed to any hypothetical holiday truces with Russia, noting that Kiev would only agree to a total ceasefire "when not a single invader remains on the ground."

Earlier this week, Peskov stated that any withdrawal of Russian soldiers from the area of its military operation before the end of the year was ruled out.

Furthermore, he noted that if Ukraine wants peace, it must consider "the new realities," alluding to the four former Ukrainian regions that voted to join Russia last year, following Crimea's decision in 2014 in response to a coup in Kiev.
