Serbia will look to send troops to Kosovo

(MENAFN) President Aleksandar Vucic announced on Saturday that Serbia is going to ask for the deployment of its troops to Kosovo amid an Albanian-led campaign of repression against the Serb community there. Vucic claimed that he anticipates the proposal being turned down by NATO allies of Kosovo.

Vucic spoke in reference to the Kosovo Force operation being directed by NATO in the region, “we will send a request to the KFOR commander to ensure the deployment of members of the army and Police of the Republic of Serbia to the territory of Kosovo and Metohija.”

According to United Nation Security Council Resolution 1244, Serbia has the authority to send military and law enforcement forces to Kosovo in a variety of circumstances, including when the "peaceful and normal life" of its citizens there is under danger.

Since the NATO alliance intervened in 1999 to eject Yugoslav soldiers from the province, Kosovo has been under NATO control. Despite the fact that "it is an obligation for KFOR," according to Vucic, KFOR is likely to turn down his request in light of the occupation and Kosovo's 2008 proclamation of independence.
