US blacklisted key North Korean leaders

(MENAFN) The United States has sanctioned three senior North Korean officials, accusing them of direct involvement in the country's "illegal" ballistic missile program and condemning Pyongyang for conducting a record number of nuclear tests this year.

On Thursday, the Treasury Department announced fresh sanctions against Jon Il Ho, Yu Jin, and Kim Su Gil "for being officials of the [Workers' Party of Korea]" and their claimed links to the "creation of weapons of mass destruction."

“These actions follow the DPRK’s unprecedented launch of over 60 ballistic missiles this year, including the test of several intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs),” Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated in an announcement, highlighting that the US worked “in close coordination” with Tokyo and Seoul in devising the sanctions.

Though Jon and Yu were stated to have played "important roles" in North Korea's missile development, the Treasury provided no details, simply noting that they had “personally attended numerous ballistic missile launches” since 2017.
