Turkish cult leader was sentenced to 8,658 years in prison

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, Istanbul's High Criminal Court sentenced controversial "cult leader" Adnan Oktar to 8,658 years in jail, bringing the Islamic televangelist's retrial to a close with one of the world's harshest punishments.

Oktar was found guilty of leading a criminal organization, sexual abuse, denial of educational rights, torture, kidnapping, and unlawful data storage.

Only 891 years of the overall sentence were for crimes perpetrated by Oktar, with the remainder being for crimes committed by his pupils. Fourteen of his supporters received similar punishments.

In September, Oktar and his followers were charged with conducting an armed group, manipulating religious feeling, espionage, and defamation of ex-members, while the cult leader was accused of systemic sexual abuse of members and gathering private data on prominent individuals for blackmail reasons. When police stormed their property in 2018, they discovered a criminal ring disguised as an eccentric Islamic creationist sect. His television channel was turned off.
