UN: First Ukrainian ship for Horn of Africa arrives in Djibouti port

(MENAFN) According to the World Food Programme, a ship chartered by the United Nations and filled with Ukrainian wheat bound for millions of Ethiopians at risk of starvation has landed in Djibouti.

Two weeks after leaving a Black Sea port in Ukraine, the bulk carrier MV Brave Commander, which is transporting 23,000 tons of grain, docked in the port city on the Horn of Africa on Tuesday.

“We have officially docked! The first WFP ship to carry Ukrainian grain since February has just arrived in Djibouti,” WFP executive director David Beasley posted a tweet. “Now, let’s get this wheat offloaded and on to Ethiopia.”

According to the UN agency, malnutrition and food insecurity are severe issues in Ethiopia, where an estimated 20.4 million people require food assistance.

After Russia invaded the country in February, Ukraine, one of the biggest grain exporters in the world, was forced to halt practically all shipments, sparking worries of a worldwide food crisis.

A settlement between Kyiv and Moscow that was mediated by the UN and Turkey in July saw the resumption of exports of wheat, other foodstuffs, and fertilizers from three Black Sea ports at the beginning of this month.
