Berlin chooses representative to speak with Moscow

(MENAFN) Current German chancellor Olaf Scholz suggested on Thursday that former chancellor Gerhard Schroder could serve as a potential middleman in the ongoing dispute with Russia over reduced gas deliveries.

At his first summer press conference since taking office last year, Scholz said it would be "commendable" if Schroder spoke to Moscow about the turbine that is currently in Germany.

According to Scholz, Russia would restart gas supplies via this route as soon as possible if the equipment essential to the Nord Stream 1 pipeline's operation were returned.

Following maintenance in Canada, the turbine became entangled in a significant dispute between Germany and Russia. In order to maintain the gas flow to the EU at its maximum capacity, the equipment was supposed to be shipped to the compressor station at the pipeline in Russia back in May. However, Canada initially postponed its return because of its sanctions against Moscow. According to Russian gas company Gazprom, it is currently stranded in Germany due to a lack of proper documentation.
