Kenyan President names new army chief of staff as part of military adjustments


(MENAFN) Lieut. Gen. Peter Njiru was chosen by Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta to lead the nation's armed forces.

Njiru has reportedly been promoted, according to the Kenya Defense Forces “Lieut Gen. Walter Koipaton retires on completion of four years tour of duty.”

Based on the report, as the president gets ready to leave office in three weeks, Kenyatta agreed on a number of changes to the army, including upgrading his aide-de-camp, Timothy Stelu, from colonel to brigadier rank. In addition to making modifications to the navy, air force, and army, he also elevated army officers. Moreover, on July 13, 2018, Koipatonis was named army chief.

On May 14, 1982, he joined in the military as an officer cadet, and on April 14, 1983, he was commissioned as an officer.

He was sent to the 3rd Kenya Rifles as a platoon leader after completing his training and served in a number of positions, including Officer Commanding and then as Commanding Officer.
