US: Protests erupt when another African American is killed by police

(MENAFN) The shooting murder of yet another African American by US police in the Midwestern city of Akron has provoked demonstrations, prompting officials to adopt unprecedented steps in fear of a riot.

Angry protestors came to the streets of Akron, Ohio, on Friday in response to the murder of Jayland Walker, 25, earlier this week for a traffic infraction, according to local media quoting the Akron police department.

According to local authorities, eight police officers were placed on paid administrative leave as the city braced for fresh demonstrations following the event.

Snowplows and other huge equipment have been stationed near the police station in the city of almost 190,000 inhabitants to act as obstacles.

Akron police department spokesman, Lt. Michael Miller, stated, "We are planning for a possible gathering for demonstrations and ensuring continuity of services are provided to the entire community, including areas in and around downtown."

"We are utilizing various tools and such in the event barricades are needed," he highlighted.
Meanwhile, the traditional Independence Day celebrations scheduled for July 4 have been postponed because to worries of further major street protests.

Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan announced the postponement, saying, "Now is not the time for a city-led celebration."
