Srinagar- In absence of a proper traffic management system in Srinagar, commuters often witness traffic jams at busy junctions and squares in the city. For passengers who board buses to commute in the city, it is always a long journey. Commuters complain buses move at a very slow pace which causes severe mental trauma and anguish to the passengers.

In addition to slow pace, the overcrowded buses results in the harassment of the female folk who have long complained of sexual harassment in public transport.

Passengers say buses are overcrowded to such an extent that there is no space left to move around.

Passengers from many areas of the city including Parimpora to Lalchowk, Jahangir Chowk to Bemina, HMT, Qamarwari, Barzulla-Bhagat, Rawalpora, Hyderpora, Wanabal-Rawalpora, Bagh Mehtab, Chanapora, Natipora, Nowgam, Dargah, Braien, Nishat, Shalimar, Harwan and many other routes are confronted with menace of overcrowded buses and slow movement of public transport.

Azhar Ansar a Shopkeeper from Barzulla said he owns a shop at Hazratbal Srinagar.
“Although it takes half an hour by car from Lalchowk to my shop, it takes one hour and twenty minutes through public transport” said Azhar, adding that many times his sales are affected due to his late arrival.

Another shopkeeper Umar Ahmed said that he now boards the vehicle half an hour earlier so that he can reach his shop on time.

''It is not the fault of these mini bus drivers; it is the fault of poor traffic rules which are implemented here and no action is taken against the violators'', he added.

Meanwhile, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has failed to make the traffic lights in the city functional. Despite promises from officials in the past, the SMC has not been able to meet the deadlines.

Earlier, talking to Kashmir Observer SSP Traffic Srinagar Muzaffar Ahmad Shah attributed traffic snarls in the city to a number of reasons.

“The ever increasing vehicles on the roads, lack of parking spaces and lack of traffic sense among some people are the main reasons for traffic jams in the city” he said.

“We are trying our level best to regulate the traffic” he added. (With CNS Inputs)
