Qatar - Philharmonic to hold three concerts before Ramadan

Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) will hold three more concerts this month before it goes on a break in time for the holy month of Ramadan.

Tomorrow, March 10 a free concert titled“The Philharmonic at the Library: Music Unites! CineMoon ensemble meets AFCENT band,” will be held at Qatar National Library (QNL) at 6pm. 

CineMoon ensemble, member of QPO has teamed up with the AFCENT Band or the US Air Forces Central Band for an evening concert featuring music from the compositions of Leonard Bernstein, Jerry Rocke, Warren Casey, Jim Jacobs, and ABBA among others.

They will play Selections from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein, Fiddler on The Roof by Jerry Rocke, Music from Grease by Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs; Chicago by Fred Ebb and John Kander; Sing, Sing, Sing by Louis Prima; Selections from Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Weber; Selections from Aladdin by Alan Menken; Mamma Mia, I have a Dream, and Dancing Queen by ABBA; and Songs from Jersey Boys.

The concert will be free and interested individuals can register via QNL's website.

Two more concerts will then be followed which will be conducted at Abdul Aziz Nasser Theatre at Souq Waqif. On March 11, Friday, QPO will play“Musical Journey” and on March 26,“Pearls of Music.” 

The Friday concert will take you into a musical journey in east and northern Europe. The journey begins with Bedřich Smetana's Overture from The Bartered Bride and The Moldau from Ma Vlast, continuing to Hungary with Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No.2, D Minor.

It will then have a brief stop in Russia with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Overture from Romeo and Juliet followed by one of his most famous Waltz Eugen Onegin. And the final destination is Finland with Jean Sibelius and his Karelia Suite, Op.11. There are two timings for the“Musical Journey,” one at 5pm and at 7:30pm.

Meanwhile, the“Pearls of Music” will only have one timing which is at 7:30pm. QPO collaborates with award winner of the Young Talent Award, American Protege Competition and Crescendo Competition. 

The performance will be led by soloist Lulwa Al Shamlan and the leading Conductor Kamoliddin Urinbaev. This memorable concert features Saint-Saëns' most popular piano concerto and Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4 which is considered as one of the most performed symphonies of the end of the 20th century, a pillar of the Western classical orchestral repertoire.

QPO will resume having concert starting on May 26 with“The Philharmonic at the Library: Unravel,” and on June 8 play“The Philharmonic at the Library: Electronic Maqam.”
