Qatar - Foundation laid for new Indian Embassy complex

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and External Affairs Minister of India H E Dr. S Jaishankar yesterday unveiled the foundation stone of the Embassy of India Chancery Building at Diplomatic Enclave in Onaiza. 

The project will cover 5,000sqm and will be the permanent structure of the Indian Embassy in Doha. The new facility will have an administrative building, a community hall, an auditorium, and other facilities enabling the Embassy to hold cultural and other events for the Indian expatriate community. 

The event was attended by the Ambassador of India H E Dr. Deepak Mittal, Qatari officials, representatives from the Indian Embassy, expatriate community leaders and prominent Indian educationists and businessmen. 

Addressing the event, Dr. Jaishankar expressed his happiness to be part of the foundation laying ceremony. He stressed the importance of the occasion because Qatar is a second home to 750,000 Indian expatriates. 

The Minister thanked H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and other Qatari dignitaries for facilitating the allotment of the land for the new premises.

“The presence of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs is a pride for all Indians in Qatar. It also reflects the growing strength and mutual trust of the India-Qatar partnership. I take this opportunity to convey my deepest gratitude to Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Father Amir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani for their continuous support to the Indian community in Qatar,” said Dr. Jaishankar.

He said that India's relationship with Qatar is strengthening under honourable Prime Minister of India and H H the Amir, as both countries will mark 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2023. 

Dr. Jaishankar said that the Indian community had raised its prestige through its efforts, adding to Qatar's social and economic development.

He assured Indians that the Ministry of External Affairs is working to protect their welfare, citing established mechanisms that have been implemented to ensure the safety of Indians abroad. The measures include Indian Community Welfare Fund; Community Welfare Wings; 24x7 helplines; Pravasi Bharatiya Sahayata Kendras; and the MADAD portal.

Dr. Jaishankar added:“We are trying to link with you directly through our social media platforms and Pravashi Rishta portal. Today, the e-Migrate portal has evolved into a fully integrated online portal to make the emigration process swift and transparent. 

The important role of government welfare schemes such as Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojana, Pre-Departure Orientation Training in equipping the emigrant workers cannot be overemphasised,” he added. 

The Minister said that the Government is taking steps towards prompt and efficient service delivery through embassies.

“Whether it is our professionals, students, or the blue-collared workers, we strive to work for the welfare of all. I express my appreciation for the Indian community apex bodies in Qatar who work together with the Embassy for the welfare of the Indian people.”
