Algeria: People cast their votes in first parliamentary polls since Bouteflika’s exit


(MENAFN) On Saturday, Jun. 12 voting kicked off in the Algerian first parliamentary polls since the exit of long-serving President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in 2019 amidst firm safety procedures considering the COVID-19 pandemic.

Voting centers opened nationally at 08:00 local time (07:00 GMT) and will shut at 19:00 local time (18:00 GMT).

Over 24 million people are eligible to cast their vote in Saturday’s elections.

An overall of 22,000 candidates are participating in the race, comprising 1,080 from 28 political parties and 1,208 independent people, to earn seats in the 407-member parliament.
