Publishing house to host discussion of immigrant literature

São Paulo – Publishing house Tabla is hosting at 5 pm (BRT) on Friday (23) an online debate on literature by Syrian and Lebanese immigrants and their descendants in Brazil. The coordinator of the Syrian and Lebanese Heritage in Brazil Digitalization Project, Heloisa Abreu Dib Julien (pictured above), who's also a historian at the University of São Paulo (USP), will be one of the speakers.

The project Mrs. Julien is running is a tandem initiative from the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) and Lebanon's Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK), designed to document and digitalize the history of Syrian and Lebanese immigration to Brazil. Speakers will also include Alberto Sismondini, of the University of Coimbra, whose subjects of study include Brazilian literature by Syrian-Lebanese authors, and the journalist and researcher Christina Queiroz, who holds a doctorate degree in Arab Studies from USP. The poet, critic and professor Michel Sleiman, who's part of the Tabla translator staff, will moderate the discussion.

The debate Um Olhar sobre a Literatura de Imigrantes: libaneses, sírios e descendentes no Brasil (Immigrant Literature: Lebanese, Syrians and descendants in Brazil) is part of publishing house Tabla's Diaspora Cycle. It will cover recent literary output as well as books written Arabic in Brazil during the last century. Tabla's own output includes books by Arab authors, translated into Brazilian Portuguese.
