HEALTHPOINT EXPERT ADVISES CHANGES TO ORAL CARE ROUTINE DURING RAMADAN

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: The act of fasting can cause bacteria to build up in the mouth, so paying attention to oral hygiene is very important during Ramadan, says the Head of Department of Dentistry at Healthpoint, a Mubadala Health partner.

Dr. Khalid Alameri, a consultant orthodontist, explains that abstaining from drinking water and other liquids during the fasting hours can lead to the development of oral bacteria, a prime culprit in bad breath, cavities and gum disease.

He says, 'People need to adapt their oral hygiene routine during Ramadan, being sure to brush their teeth after both iftar and suhoor to prevent bacteria from forming. Most mouth odor originates from the tongue, so using a tongue scraper twice a day will also help.'

He adds that people should not skip suhoor, which would extend the fasting hours and therefore allow more bacteria to build up.

Combatting dehydration is particularly important in avoiding bad breath, Dr Khalid points out. In addition to drinking plenty of liquids and avoiding salt, caffeine and diuretics during non-fasting hours, there are other permissible measures to prevent a dry mouth.

'If care is taken not to swallow any liquid, then the use of mouthwash or rinsing with water will not break the fast. However, some people are uncomfortable with this, so they can use miswak sticks, a natural tooth-cleaning twig, to stimulate salivary flow,' he adds.

Dr Khalid's top-five tips for fresh breath while fasting

1. When breaking your fast, avoid onions, garlic, smoking and other common causes of bad breath.

2. During non-fasting hours, be sure to drink plenty of water.

3. Brush and floss after both iftar and suhoor.

5. During the fasting hours, use a tongue scraper or miswak sticks and rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash, being careful not to swallow.

5. Use an oral pro-biotic to replenish healthy bacteria that may be lost through using too much mouthwash.
