Sri Lanka- Two injured after STF opens fire at cab in Point Pedro

(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) Two individuals have been injured after Police Special Task Force (STF) officers had opened fire at a cab that had sped past a checkpoint in Point Pedro, Jaffna.

Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said the checkpoint had been set up to protect a natural sand mound in the area.

He said a cab that was plying from the direction of the sand mound had been signaled to stop by STF officials at the checkpoint this morning.

It had however, continued to travel without heeding the signal and had crashed onto the checkpoint barriers, after which it had attempted to runover a group of STF officers standing ahead of the vehicle.

DIG Ajith Rohana said the move had prompted the STF officers to open fire at the cab and the vehicle had continued to speed off despite a flat tyre.

He said the Police had later received information that two individuals had been admitted to the Point Pedro hospital with gunshot wounds.

The Police Spokesman said it is suspected that the two individuals, aged 23 and 26, may be the suspects who had travelled in the cab.

The Point Pedro Police has commenced investigations into the incident and has launched a search operation for the cab.

DIG Ajith Rohana said statements have also been recorded from the STF officers who were at the checkpoint in Point Pedro. (Colombo Gazette)
