US-China power games prevent consolidation of democracy in Myanmar

(MENAFN)According to Turkish experts on Asian affairs, foreign interventions and US-China power games averted the consolidation of democracy in Myanmar and rendered the country vulnerable to military coups.

Anadolu Agency quoted Seyfettin Erol, a senior expert at the Ankara Centre for Crisis and Policy Studies (ANKASAM) as saying that American-Chinese rivalry in the Asia-Pacific Rim was the main reason behind the recent military coup in Myanmar.

“The military coup is a show of power against the US and some other Western countries. On the other hand, the White House’s reaction against the coup has rather something to do with losing a significant position than worrying about the state of democracy or human rights in Myanmar,” stated Erol, saying that the revolution exposed China’s influence in Myanmar and the Asia-Pacific in general.
