Brazil: floods, landslides leave 10 dead


(MENAFN) According to state officials, on Thursday, Dec. 17, at least 10 people were left dead in floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in Presidente Getulio, a town located in southern Brazil's Santa Catarina state, next to Argentina.

The head of Presidente Getulio's fire department, Alex Lima, stated: "the situation in Presidente Getulio is critical due to the floods: houses, vehicles, everything destroyed, people with water up to their shoulders."

According to a report by officials, civil defense rescue teams were also looking for 12 missing people in impacted neighborhoods.

A heavy storm on Thursday morning hit a number of towns, some near Florianopolis, the state capital and one of the most central tourist destinations in the country.
