(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) The United National Party confirmed that it will pick either party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya or Sajith Premadasa as the UNP Presidential candidate.
State Minister of Defence and Mass Media non-cabinet Minister and UNP Gampaha District Member of Parliament Ruwan Wijewardene said that there is one group in the UNP who want Wickremesinghe to contest the next Presidential election while another group backs Karu Jayasuriya and another Sajith Premadasa.
Wijewardene said that the UNP will now need to meet to select the best candidate.
He said that with the Presidential elections just a few months away the UNP will need to decide on its Presidential candidate soon.
Wijewardene said the UNP will also meet on 5 August to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with its coalition partners.
