The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF) on Tuesday signed an agreement with the office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in the sultanate for the development and management of small pelagic fish in Oman.

FAO will implement the project from September 1 in partnership with international experts from FAO and their Omani counterparts.

The agreement was signed by H E Dr Saud bin Hamoud al Habsi, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Fisheries, and Dr Nora Ourabah Haddad, representative of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in the sultanate.

The agreement aims to develop the small pelagic fish in the sultanate and increase the revenues of these products through the development of fisheries projects that will create new employment opportunities for the national workforce.

The project will also attract investors to increase production and fish processing, which contributes to food security by providing the needs of local and regional markets.

Small pelagic fish of various types forms major part of the total annual production in the sector. Artisanal fishermen catch them in both the Sea of Oman and the Arabian Sea using traditional fishing equipment.

MoAF seeks to develop the artisanal fishing sector through the implementation of programmes and projects that improve the efficiency of the fisheries sector.
