Tripartite polls kick off in Malawi


(MENAFN) Malawi opened on Tuesday its polling stations as citizens rushed to cast their votes to choose a president, lawmakers and local government councilors.

Seven candidates are fighting for the position of president, with incumbent President Peter Mutharika among them to win a second term.

Those elected figures will be granted power for a five-year period, indicating the significance of such elections for the people of Malawi.

The Malawi Electoral Electoral Commission (MEC) confirmed on Monday that it was prepared to commence the polls with all logistics already set.
