(MENAFN- Asia Times) A 29-year-old Singaporean man, who pleaded guilty to raping and robbing a Vietnamese woman, was sentenced to 14 years in jail and 24 strokes of the cane at the High Court in Singapore on Monday.
A man had allegedly fallen in love with the 30-year-old Vietnamese woman, who he robbed and raped at knifepoint in August two years ago. Chew Teng Wee, a forklift driver, pleaded guilty to one charge each of robbery and aggravated rape for the offenses on August 30, 2017, the Lianhe Zaobao (Singapore) reported.
The High Court heard that Chew first met the then 28-year-old Vietnamese victim in May 2017 while she was working as an ‘artiste' at a KTV club in Jalan Besar. She was also known to be making a living as a sex worker.
The man had her phone number from her co-worker and tried to chase the woman through the WeChat messaging app, but she was not interested and brushed him off. Three months later on August 30, 2017, the man called her for sex and the woman did not recognize his voice. Chew agreed to pay S$200 (US$147) and asked her to take a taxi to his place in Jurong.
Between 1:35 am and 3 am that day, when the woman was at his flat, she asked him for payment but Chew told her he only had S$50. However, he suggested he could withdraw the balance after they had sex. She also asked if he had a condom and he said no.
The woman then refused to have sex with him without protection and full payment, but the man grabbed a 20-centimeter knife, placed it against her neck and gave her a superficial cut. The woman then complied with Chew, handing him S$200, performing oral sex and letting him take photos and a video on his mobile phone. They also had unprotected sex.
The woman later returned to Orchard Towers where she told her friends about the incident. A passer-by who saw the distressed woman called police at about 4:40 am, leading to the arrest of Chew later that day.
The judge noted that Chew's acts were premeditated as he kept the victim in the dark from knowing his address and took her through a "needlessly convoluted route" to his unit.
Based on Chew's past convictions for theft and criminal breach of trust, he also showed a trend of offences against women.
