Oman swimmers corner glory


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman's experienced swimmer Khalid al Kulaibi claimed a gold while his teammate Ayman al Qasmi claimed a silver in the men's 5km race at the 17th GCC Open Water Swimming Championships in Kuwait on Friday.

Also adding to the individual medals tally for Oman was Muhannad Auladthani, who bagged a bronze in 5km youth category (15-17 years).

The championships in Kuwait is hosting the GCC event along with the fourth Arab and ninth Asian championships.

A total of 119 swimmers from 16 countries are competing in these three championships.

Taha al Kishry, Oman Swimming Association chief and Arab Swimming Federation chairman, later awarded the winners. Kishry is also the chairman of the GCC Swimming Sports Committee. Kulaibi won the gold in a time 1hr:26m:28.5s while Qasmi clocked 1:26:28.8 for the silver. Nidhal al Harassi was part of the team as Oman also claimed the team title.

In the 15-17 years age-category, Oman's Muhannad Auladthani, Shihab Alaa Deen and Bashar al Kulaibi led Oman to team gold.

Qatar swimmer Mohamed Mahmoud bagged gold in the individual with a time of 1:29:34:9.

Bahrain's Omer Abdullah won the second place with 1:31:49.3 while Oman's Muhannad took the bronze in 1:35:16.9.

The Arab championship gold was won by Marwan Al Amrawi of Egypt in a time of 1:12:35.6 ahead of the Saleh Mohammed of Syria (1:13:18.9).

Vitaly Khodyakov of Kazakhstan won the Asian title in a time of 1:12:27.0 while Japan's Yushok Miamoto bagged the silver in 1:12:28.3.

A total of 65 referees were involved in managing the races under Oman's Abdul Munim al Alawi, member of the FINA open water technical committee.
