Qatar- NHRC organises seminar on municipal council elections

Doha: The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) organised a seminar for the candidates of the Central Municipal Council elections on the rights and duties before and after the electoral process, attended by the candidates from 29 constituencies of the council in its sixth session.

NHRC Member Mohammed Saif Al Kuwari said the elections culture complies only with civilised societies. He added that running for elections is a positive sign to measure the extent to which the individual is present in their society and openness to the other.

The NHRC Member added that for an individual to run for elections is proof of their abstraction to serve regardless of victory or not.

The NHRC Member presented facts in figures about previous sessions of the Municipal Council since its first session in 1999.

Al Kuwari addressed the negative aspects of some types of election propaganda, stressing the importance for the candidate to be realistic and credible and that the promises they make during the electoral programme are applicable.

The NHRC Member added that the Qatari voter has reached a stage of awareness that enables them to sense the credibility of the candidate through the electoral program, adding promises in an electoral programme are exaggerated it may cause the candidate to fail amid the conscious public mind that are aware of their requirements and the possibility of applying these promises.

He also highlighted the need for women to interact in any electoral process more especially in light of the State's tendency to open wider horizons for women's participation in the services and political scenes.

Al Kuwari added that participating in the electoral process is a national dutyin terms of running andvoting.

The NHRC Member called on all Qatari people to participate and cast their votes to deepen democratic behaviour among all members of society and lead Qatar to further democratic progress and political prosperity.
