Kuwait Parliament nods jail, heavy fines for food items businessmen violating law


(MENAFN- Arab Times) KUWAIT CITY, March 21, (KUNA): The National Assembly approved, during its follow- up session on Wednesday, amendments to regulations of the Authority for Food and Nutrition for sake of safeguard consumers' health.

The modifications, in essence, are designed to intensify examination of all nutrition products and tighten penalties against law breaking traders.

The authority that has taken over jurisdictions of the municipality at this level is advised to establish laboratories to examine imported commodities at all border exits.

The amendments stipulate, in part, penalties ranging between KD 3,000 (USD 9,000) and KD 10,000 (approximately USD 33,000) for law breakers, namely those who trade in goods that have not been properly examined.

There are also other stiff penalties, namely imprisonment for no less than three years, along with KD 50,000 fines (USD 165,000) against dealers to trade in goods unfit for human consumption.
