Qatar- Sheikha Hind honours winners of fifth IUDAC 2019

Doha: H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice-Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation (QF) awarded winners of the largest debating championship at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC), yesterday.

Princess Sumaya University for Technology in Jordan were crowned as the champions of the fifth edition of International Universities Arabic Debating Championship (IUDAC 2019) held over five days in Doha.

Machaille Al Naimi, President of Community Development, QF, Dr Hayat Abdullah Maarafi, Executive Director of QatarDebate and several other dignitaries were also present at the closing ceremony of the debate championship.

Qatar University (boys) team was awarded second place, while the team from the University of Amar Telidji in Algeria was awarded third place.

'It is an honour to win the world's largest championship, Mohammad Hattab of Princess Sumaya University for Technology in Jordan, told The Peninsula upon victory.

'I highly recommend that all university students consider learning the art of debates to improve their personalities and also take part in this championship.

Debating is not just a skill that you learn to present at competitions but it's an art that helps to improve your lives, he added.

The IUDAC 2019 organised by Qatar Debate of QF brought together more than 110 teams from 51 countries. It aim at contributing towards spreading the art of debate and the cultural exchange of participants.

The event brought together young Arabic and non-native Arabic speaking debaters from Europe, North America, Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia. This year had nine new participants including Serbia, Kosovo Azerbaijan, Macedonia and Iran took part in the championship.

A special prize was awarded to the best non native Arabic speaking individual and team

Islamic Science University of Malaysia were chosen as to the best non native Arabic speaking team.

'I participated in the championship for the second time. It was a very great opportunity. Arabic is foreign language for us and the championship gave was a platform to peruse our intelligence and skills, said Muzakhir Dally representing the team from Islamic Science University of Malaysia.

Best individual speakers were also awarded at the closing ceremony of the IUDAC 2019.

'We are here together to celebrate the Arabic language and passion for debate, said Dr Maarafi.

'This championship is a way to protect and preserve the Arabic language, she added.

She also asked the participants to take a pledge that they will protect the Arabic language regardless of which country they are from.

The Dialogue and debate Club from Libya was announced as the winner of ‘Pioneers award' presented to the best project to spread the art of debate based on precise judging standards.

The fifth IUDC was held under the new corporate re-brand identity, and the new slogan, ‘Dialogue, Debate, and Diplomacy of QatarDebate.'
