Arab League worried over Honduras transferring embassy to Jerusalem

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, Jan 6 (KUNA) -- The Arab League has expressed concern over reports that Honduras intends to transfer its embassy to Jerusalem, saying that any step by any country "constitutes a clear violation of the principles of international law." Arab League Secretary-General Ahmad Abul Gheit said in a statement Sunday that the principles of international law consider Jerusalem an occupied territory and prohibit the transfer of embassies to it before resolving its status through negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides.
He noted that the countries that are considering steps to undermine the legal status of Jerusalem, recognizing it as the capital of Israel and transferring their embassies to it should review their positions and examine the consequences of such steps on their relations with the Arab world.
He pointed out that consultations are underway at the Arab level to coordinate positions against the declared Brazilian position to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and transfer the embassy to it.
Abul Gheit called on the Arab countries to work intensively at this stage to get Brazil to change this position, especially since it has been one of the countries that have long championed the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. (end) mfm.aa
