Doha: ExxonMobil Foundation yesterday announced that it contributed QR1.8m to a school construction project overseen by Education Above All Foundation (EAA).

Alistair Routledge, president and general manager of ExxonMobil Qatar, presented a ceremonial donation cheque to the chief executive officer of EAA, at the 2019 Qatar ExxonMobil Open award ceremony on January 5.

They were joined by Nasser bin Ghanim Al Khelaifi, President of Qatar Tennis Federation, and Andrew P Swiger, senior vice president of ExxonMobil Corporation.

The contribution will support construction of 25 new primary schools in Angola in partnership with Rise International.

The project is part of the Educate A Child (EAC) program, which operates under the EAA umbrella and provides educational opportunities to the most marginalised and hardest to reach out of school children around the world. The contribution marks ExxonMobil's second donation to the project. Last year, the company provided QR3.6 million to launch the initiative in Angola.

'Education Above All equips children around the world with lifelong skills that improve lives, said Routledge. 'Sustainable societies cannot be built if children are not given the opportunity to develop a strong foundation for growth, success and lifelong learning.

'Our community outreach strategy at ExxonMobil heavily focuses on education. Our partnership with Education Above All is built on the shared belief that education is the most powerful investment in society because the benefits are long-term — it ensures the advancement of future generations and the progress of nations, he added.

'Educate A Child is delighted to continue to strengthen its partnership with ExxonMobil towards ensuring the provision of quality primary education for the most marginalized and hardest to reach children around the world.

Our work with RISE International in Angola, with generous support from ExxonMobil, will facilitate access to education through the provision of essential school infrastructure for children who have been impacted by conflict, poverty and disease.

Education is not only a fundamental right for all children, but we believe it is also the most effective means of reducing poverty, generating economic growth and creating peaceful and just societies, said Mary Joy Pigozzi, Executive Director of Educate A Child.

EAA was established in 2012 by H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser to build a global movement that contributes to human, social and economic development through quality education.

Through capacity building, resource mobilisation, and forming multisectoral solutions through partnerships and alliances, EAA addresses educational issues with a special commitment to the world's most underserved populations.

To date, ExxonMobil and EAC are working together in Nigeria to enroll more than 500,000 out-of-school children and in Angola where 24,000 primary schoolchildren will be given access to education through the construction of new schools.

ExxonMobil also works closely with local partners to ensure that students in Qatar's schools have access to quality education. A strong education that fosters creativity and innovation will play an essential role in creating the knowledge-based economy that Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, envisions for Qatar.

ExxonMobil is supporting the objectives of the National Vision 2030 by helping to enhance education in Qatar particularly in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The company invests in local education and teacher development programs that inspire STEM teaching and learning in order to build a skilled and productive workforce for Qatar's sustainable future.
