(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The 5th Fazza Boccia World Open Fazza BISFED 2018 Dubai will be held at the Shabab Al Ahli Dubai Club from Dec. 15-20.
Organised and hosted by the Dubai Club for People of Determination under the banner of the annual Fazza Championships for the People of Determination, this year's event has attracted a record 106 athletes representing 22 countries from across the world. The third edition of the competition in 2016 had drawn 105 participants from 15 countries.
The details of the six-day competition were announced by Majid Al Usaimi, Executive Director of the Dubai Club for People of Determination in the presence of Fawaz Al Hashmi, Public Relations Officer at the club, at a press conference on Wednesday.
The competition will be organised in all four categories, namely BC1, BC2, BC3 and BC4 with winners in each of the categories assimilating points towards qualifying to the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. These four sport classes are decided depending on the functional ability of the participating athletes.
"The participating countries are aware of the significance of this competition as it doubles up as a World Cup and qualifying round towards Tokyo 2020. We want to raise the profile of this sport in the UAE and the presence of some of the best players from across the world will only help this cause," Al Usaimi noted at the press conference.
As the hosts, the UAE will have a squad of nine athletes, including five men and four women. There are seven new entrants from among the nations with Croatia, France, Netherlands, Greece, Morocco, South Africa and Slovenia making their debut in Dubai.
Thailand has been a dominant force in Boccia with Witsanu Huadpradit ranked No.2 in the world in the BC1 class, while teammate Worawut Saengampa is the world number one in BC2.
