Two arrested for running illegal bar in Central

Two Filipinos were arrested on Saturday for allegedly selling alcohol without a license in Central on Hong Kong Island.

Acting on a tip-off, officers from the anti-triad squad of Central Police Station raided a bar at 11 Lei Yuen Street West at 7:30pm, Oriental Daily reported.

A 38-year-old Filipino man was arrested for alleged storage and possession of alcohol for sale without a license, and breaching the conditions of his stay.

A 30-year-old Filipina woman was also arrested for allegedly possessing liquor for sale without a license and a breach of the conditions of her stay.

The two have been detained for further investigation.

Officers confiscated 2,300 bottles of beer worth around HK$69,000 (US$8,808) and HK$5,200 cash.

Under Hong Kong law, if a place is unlicensed for selling liquor, the person in charge of the place shall be guilty. Upon conviction, he or she would be liable to a maximum penalty of a $1 million fine and imprisonment for up to two years.
