(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Omani biker Maher al Barwani, who began a road trip to the African continent onJuly 22, last year aiming to cover 46 countries is seeking sponsorship to fulfil his dream. Barwani has covered only nine countries (19,000km) so far since he left Oman last year.
Speaking to Muscat Daily from Tanzania, where he has spent most of his time, he said, 'The biggest challenge I have faced till now is getting sponsorship for my journey. I got sponsorship from the Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) which I used up to kickstart my dream journey. I thank PDO for the big support they offered.'
Barwani has also been given a flag by the Ministry of Tourism in Zanzibar (a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa) to promote the region till he exits the place. 'I am the ambassador of tourism in Zanzibar.'
Though Barwani is getting the support of his family and friends, he hopes to get more official support on all aspects of the journey. 'The journey costs a lot and I have a family back home so that makes me little worried on how they are living. I am calling for sponsorship from different companies so I can complete my journey with ease. I also appeal to the Ministry of Sports Affairs [in Oman],' Barwani said.
A trained mechanic, Barwani knows how to take care of himself. 'I ride solo and carry all that I require with me.'
The African continent is the second largest in the world but Barwani is determined to cover the length and breadth of the region. So far, Barwani has covered the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania. 'I have travelled around 19,000km from Oman to Tanzania. I am left with 37 countries, which would mean another 30,000km. I am not very sure when I will return back home. It may be in November but it could be longer.'
