Turkey: 890 sentenced to life in 136 cases after 2016 coup


(MENAFN) Following the July 2016, the Turkish government has sentenced almost 890 people to life in 136 cases, over their links to Gulen movement which Turkey holds responsible for the July 2016 coup attempt, semi-official Anadolu Agency reported.

The Gulent movement, an Islamist sect led by exiled preacher Fethullah Gulen, broke with Turkey's leading Justice and Development Party (AKP), to which it was formerly allied, in December of 2013 and stands accused of perpetrating a failed coup attempt in July 2016 .

Tens of thousands of members of the movement have either been jailed or fired from their jobs or have left Turkey following the failed coup.

Turkish prosecutors have conducted more than 100,000 investigations targeting alleged members of the Gulen movement since July 15, 2016. Verdicts were given in 137 out of 285 cases that were filed against those allegedly linked to the movement over their suspected involvement in the controversial coup bid.
