Sunken tanker spread in East China Sea


(MENAFN) According to Chinese authorities, oil from an Iranian tanker that sank in the East China Sea has dispersed into four separate slicks, covering a whole area of over 100 square kms.

The State Oceanic Administration (SOA), prior satellite imaging showed two large slicks, with the larger one also thicker and more concentrated, but the latest data found four slicks ranging in size from 48 square kms to 5.5 square kms.

Tanker Sanchi sank on Sunday, in the worst oil ship disaster in many years, raising concerns about damage to the marine ecosystem, while the two sailors' bodies were recovered from the ship while a third body was pulled from the sea near the vessel, and the rest of the 29 crew members are believed to be dead.

According to the Chinese Ministry of Transport, a rescue team has located the wreck, which is at a depth of 115 meters under sea level, and is preparing to send underwater robots to explore it.
