Afghanistan- IEC slams govt over not replacing its ousted member

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission () on Tuesday hit out at the government over not introducing a replacement to an ousted the commissioner.

The electoral body also announced sending the draft voter registration plan to the government for approval after it was prepared in three months.

IEC member and spokesman, Abdul Badee Sayyad, during a joint press conference with other commissioners, said suggestions of political parties and civil activists had been incorporated in the voter list plan.

He said based on the draft plan, individuals meeting necessary requirements and were willing to vote would be registered through their paper identity documents.

He said the draft had been shared with the government leadership, the Finance Ministry and international donors. He hoped the relevant organs would arrange budget for implementing the draft scheme.

At every registration centre, there would be separate places for and based on the IEC plan, registration would start from March next year.

Delay in introducing commissioner:

Sayyad said an IEC commissioner was dismissed about one month back and the government should have introduced his replacement within one week since then.

He asked the government to decide the fate of IEC's secretariat as well.

However, IEC secretariat head, Mohammad Warimach, at the conference, said the fate of the secretariat was known.

'President Ashraf Ghani has verbally told me during a coordination meeting that if improvements do not happen in IEC affairs, then he would relocate me.' He said no step had been taken at removing him from the post.

Election date:

Warimach said: 'The IEC has promised the elections will be held right on schedule if security is ensured as promised by security organs, ID papers are issued timely, and budget is provided to IEC in time.'

He said the commission had been making efforts over the past one year to make the preparations for polls a success, but there was government's dereliction.

The IEC has announced July 7, 2018 as a date for holding and district councils polls.
