Washington, Dhu-AlHijjah 20, 1438, September 11, 2017, SPA -- Irma has moved straight into the Florida Peninsula
as a category-2 storm, the US National Hurricane Center says, according to dpa.
The massive storm, packing heavy rain and strong winds, was centred about 25 kilometres east-north-east of Fort Myers, a major city on the state's Gulf coast.
Maximum sustained winds have decreased to about 165 kilometres per hour with higher gusts. Although weakening is forecast, Irma is expected to remain a hurricane at least through Monday morning.
The hurricane agency says the eye of Irma - the strongest part of the storm - should move near or over the west coast of Florida through Monday morning.
