Kuwait to install hi-tech traffic monitoring system


(MENAFN- Arab Times) KUWAIT CITY Jan 27 (Agencies): The Kuwait Municipality signed Tuesday a multi-million dinars deal with a foreign company to establish a world-class highly sophisticated system for monitoring traffic across the nation. 'The traffic monitoring system is the first of its kind in the Middle East region and would help create a data base bank about the traffic across Kuwait ' General Director Eng. Ahmad Al-Subaih told reporters on the sidelines of the contract signing ceremony. He added that the system will cost KD 5.5 million and will start operation after 18 months.

The system will monitor and provide around-the-clock data about the traffic situation on the main roads in Kuwait Al- Subaih stated. He noted that monitoring and data collection devices would be installed in more than 200 sites on the main roads and in nearly 2700 sites on road intersections and roundabouts. The data would be sent by wireless means to the traffic data center at the Kuwait Municipality to be analyzed and classified by a specialized team.

Meanwhile MP Kamel Al-Awadhi emphasized the importance of finding lasting solution to the issue of traffic jam while conserving electricity and water and making good use of the long hours of daytime in summer reports Al-Anba daily.

The lawmaker disclosed a project he embarked upon for a whole year to move the clock two hours ahead to keep people away from the sunlight during summer and at the same time utilize early sunrise in the country. At a recent seminar in Kuwait University (Khaldiya campus) Al- Awadhi explained the project and its positive impact and noted that several meetings were held at Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research with representatives from various establishments in relation to the issue and they all agreed in principle on the idea.

For his part Assistant Undersecretary for Planning and Training Sector at Ministry of Electricity and Water Dr Meshan Al-Otaibi stated that MP Al- Awadhi presented an integrated study on the project. He noted heavy burden falls on the power stations when A/C is switched on during the peak period from 2:30pm to 4:30 pm.
