Vietnam seeks law for coast guard to launch strikes in South China Sea

(MENAFN) Vietnam was declared to be introducing a new law for its coast guard to be allowed to open fire at sea, as pressure grows in the South China Sea waterway.

Lawmakers are predicted to cast their vote on the draft law by the end of 2018, deciding whether to give the coast guard an opportunity to become more assertive within disputed waters.

The draft law said the move was for the coast guard to "protect sovereignty and sovereign rights in defense and security situations."

The draft was confirmed to have been published on an official website that belongs to the National Assembly, which is Vietnam's law making body.
