Greece grants political asylum to Turkish officer

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, Dec 30 (KUNA) -- Greece has granted political asylum to a Turkish Army officer who fled to the country during the botched coup de 'tat in Turkey in July 2016.

According to the Greek news agency, monitored here on Saturday, the Greek asylum commission has accepted a request by Suleyman Ozkaynakci for asylum. Ozkaynackci, a co-pilot, had fled Turkey to Greece with seven other Turkish officers during the events.

The Greek news agency claimed that the Turkish soldiers would not be prosecuted by a fair court in case they returned home.

The officers had arrived in Alexandroupolis, Greece, aboard a Turkish military helicopter hours after the defeated coup in July 15, 2016.

Ankara has repeatedly urged Greece to extradite the officers saying they will be given just trial at home. (end) rs.rk
