UK Deploys Warship to Middle East Amid Hormuz Shipping Crisis
(MENAFN) Britain is dispatching a Royal Navy destroyer to the Middle East as part of contingency preparations for a potential multinational effort to safeguard commercial vessels navigating the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, the UK Defense Ministry announced Saturday.
The HMS Dragon, a Type 45 destroyer previously operating in the eastern Mediterranean off the coast of Cyprus, has been ordered to reposition ahead of a joint maritime initiative co-led by London and Paris, multiple UK news outlets reported, citing a ministry spokesman. The mission carries the backing of Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, both of whom have championed unimpeded freedom of navigation through the embattled waterway.
"We can confirm that HMS Dragon will deploy to the Middle East to pre-position ahead of any future multinational mission to protect international shipping when conditions allow them to transit the Strait of Hormuz," the spokesperson said.
"The pre-positioning of HMS Dragon is part of prudent planning that will ensure that the UK is ready, as part of a multinational coalition jointly led by the UK and France, to secure the strait, when conditions allow."
The crisis traces its roots to February 28, when coordinated US and Israeli strikes against Iran set off a chain of retaliatory moves from Tehran — targeting Israel and US allies across the Gulf — and culminated in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, sending shockwaves through global shipping markets.
A fragile ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation took hold on April 8, though subsequent negotiations in Islamabad collapsed without yielding a durable accord. President Trump later extended the truce indefinitely, creating diplomatic breathing room to pursue a permanent resolution.
Complicating matters further, the US has maintained a naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic in the waterway since April 13. Trump announced Tuesday that US forces would briefly suspend "Project Freedom" — the initiative aimed at restoring commercial shipping access — while confirming the American blockade would remain "in full force and effect."
