Slovenia, Norway Applaud ICJ’s Clarification on Israel’s Legal Duties
(MENAFN) On Wednesday, both Slovenia and Norway expressed support for the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) recent clarification regarding Israel’s legal responsibilities in the occupied Palestinian territories.
They urged Tel Aviv to fully adhere to international humanitarian and human rights laws.
Slovenia’s Foreign Ministry conveyed that the nation "welcomes the ICJ's comprehensive clarification of Israel's obligations under international law," emphasizing that Israel "is unequivocally required to fulfill its duties under international humanitarian law and human rights law."
The ministry further noted that Israel must "ensure and facilitate the provision of essential humanitarian aid, in particular by UNRWA," as well as respect the privileges and immunities granted by the United Nations.
"Compliance with these obligations is indispensable for upholding the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination and fostering regional peace and stability," the ministry stated on the social media platform X, operated by the US-based tech company.
Meanwhile, Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide also described the ICJ’s advisory opinion as "crystal clear," asserting that Israel "is obliged to facilitate both life-saving humanitarian aid and basic services to Palestine."
He added, "This is a powerful opinion reinforcing that Israel must uphold their obligations under international law."
These statements followed the ICJ’s ruling earlier on Wednesday, which determined that Israel is bound by the Geneva Convention to approve and facilitate relief efforts conducted by third-party states and neutral humanitarian organizations.
This includes groups such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), to guarantee that adequate assistance reaches the Gaza Strip.
