Rwanda Supports M23 Rebel Withdrawal Decision
(MENAFN) On Sunday, Rwandan authorities expressed their approval of the M23 rebel group’s decision to pull back from the key mining city of Walikale and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) move to cease military actions in the current war in eastern DRC.
A statement issued by the Rwandan government’s spokesperson emphasized that Rwanda supports efforts that aim to create a lasting political and security solution to the regional crisis.
“Rwanda welcomes the M23's announcement on the repositioning of its forces from Walikale in support of peace initiatives underway, as well as the DRC's announcement that all offensive operations by FARDC (government forces) and Wazalendo (pro-government militia) will be halted,” the statement read.
Furthermore, Rwanda reiterated its commitment to collaborating with all parties to ensure the fulfillment of these agreements, particularly within the framework of the joint East African Community (EAC)-Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit process and other efforts aimed at securing a lasting resolution to the region's political and security challenges.
The Alliance Fleuve Congo, a coalition of rebel groups that includes M23, declared on Saturday its desire to “reposition” its forces from Walikale as well as nearby regions.
The alliance stated that this move is in support of ongoing peace initiatives intended to create conditions that will lead to political dialogue aimed at addressing the original factors of the war in eastern Congo.
