TOKYO, Feb 3 (KUNA) -- North Korea criticized US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for calling the country a "rogue state" and vowed tough countermeasures, state-run media said Monday.
In an interview with a US journalist on January 30, Rubio said the US has rogue states like Iran and North Korea that it has to deal with.
The North Korean Foreign Ministry deems Rubio's remarks "to thoughtlessly tarnish the image of a sovereign state as a grave Political provocation," an unnamed spokesman of the ministry said in a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency.
"It is necessary to mention how absurd and illogical it is that the most depraved state in the world brands another country a rogue state," the spokesman said. It is the first time that North Korea has officially criticized the new US administration since President Donald Trump returned to the White House on January 20.
"The hostile words and deeds of the person who is in charge of the US foreign policy served as an occasion of confirming once again the US hostile policy toward the DPRK which remains unchanged."
DPRK is the acronym of North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
The spokesman also warned that Pyongyang will never tolerate provocations by the US and "will take tough counteraction corresponding to it." (end)
