Media reports Meta plans on paying Trump USD25 million

(MENAFN) Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, has reportedly agreed to pay President Donald trump $25 million to settle a lawsuit in which he accused the company of censorship following the suspension of his facebook and Instagram accounts in 2021. This case was part of Trump’s broader legal efforts against major social media platforms after they banned him following the January 6 Capitol riot.

According to sources, the settlement includes $22 million earmarked for Trump’s presidential library fund, with the remaining amount allocated for legal fees and compensation to other plaintiffs. Although Meta has not publicly commented on the terms, sources confirmed the resolution of the case. The company chose to settle after extended negotiations, which intensified following a meeting between Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Trump at Mar-a-Lago in November 2024.

As part of the settlement and to improve relations with Trump, Meta ended its third-party fact-checking program in the U.S., with Zuckerberg acknowledging that the program had been "too politically biased" and eroded trust. Additionally, Meta has decided to eliminate its diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and revise its hiring practices.

Trump had filed lawsuits against Twitter, Google, and Facebook in 2021 for censorship, arguing that if these platforms could ban a sitting president, they could do so to anyone. His case against Twitter was dismissed in 2022. Meta lifted Trump’s suspension in early 2023, reinstating his accounts with moderation guidelines in place.

Recently, ABC News also agreed to settle a defamation lawsuit with Trump for $15 million, which will go toward his presidential library. Trump’s presidential library operates digitally for now, with no plans for a physical location announced.
