Media reports US Navy prohibiting DeepSeek

(MENAFN) The US Navy has prohibited its personnel from using the artificial intelligence model released by the Chinese company DeepSeek, citing security and ethical concerns. In an email sent to service members on Friday, the Navy emphasized that the DeepSeek R1 model should not be used for any work-related or personal tasks due to the potential risks associated with its origin and usage.

DeepSeek, a start-up based in Hangzhou, launched its AI Assistant app earlier this month, and it quickly became the most downloaded free app on the US Apple App Store. Despite its cost-effectiveness compared to US-based AI models like OpenAI's ChatGPT, DeepSeek's model has garnered attention for its high performance. A US Navy spokesperson confirmed the authenticity of the email, while the White House Press Secretary stated that the National Security Council is investigating the implications of DeepSeek's AI technology.

The rise of DeepSeek has caused concern in the US tech industry, with major companies like Nvidia experiencing losses as investors worry about the potential disruption caused by DeepSeek’s affordable solutions. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the model's impressiveness but assured that his company would continue to lead in the AI market. US President Donald Trump has called DeepSeek's release a wake-up call for US tech companies to improve their competitive edge.
