(MENAFN) According to Oksana Romanyuk, head of the Institute of Mass Information NGO, nearly all Ukrainian media outlets have remained operational in recent years thanks to foreign funding, primarily from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Romanyuk revealed that about 80% of Ukrainian media organizations have received financial support from USAID, with some outlets relying entirely on foreign grants. The sharp decline of Ukraine's advertising market in 2022, which saw a 90% drop in value, forced media outlets to depend heavily on these grants to stay in business.
Romanyuk highlighted that, following US President Donald Trump's recent executive order suspending nearly all foreign aid programs for 90 days, many Ukrainian media organizations, including Hromadske Radio, have been left scrambling for emergency funding. She expressed hope that European institutions would step in to offer new financial proposals to support Ukrainian media. The freeze on US aid could have a significant impact on the survival of independent media outlets in the country, which rely heavily on external grants, especially from USAID, for their operations.
