(MENAFN) At least 20 people were confirmed dead in a plane crash in South Sudan on Wednesday morning, with only one survivor found, according to an official report. The crash occurred shortly after the plane took off from an area near the oilfields in Unity State, as it was en route to the capital city, Juba.
The state’s information minister, Gatwech Bipal, confirmed the fatalities and reported that the lone survivor is in critical condition. The individual has been transported to a hospital in Unity State for medical treatment. The tragic incident resulted in the loss of life of several individuals from various nationalities, including two Chinese nationals, one Indian, and two Ugandans.
The victims were identified as employees of the Greater Pioneer Operating Company Ltd., an oil company operating in the region. The company had organized the flight for its personnel, who were likely involved in the oil exploration activities within the area.
In response to the devastating crash, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit has ordered an official investigation to determine the cause of the accident. Authorities are working on gathering more details surrounding the incident in an effort to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
