(MENAFN) New commercial vehicle sales in the EU saw mostly positive growth in 2024, according to figures released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) on Tuesday. Sales of new vans increased by 8.3 percent, reaching 1.58 million units. This growth was observed across all four key markets, with Spain leading the charge with a 13.7 percent rise, followed by Germany at 8.4 percent, France at 1.1 percent, and Italy at 0.9 percent.
New bus sales also saw an increase, rising 9.2 percent in 2024, totaling 35,579 units. Italy recorded the largest growth at 26.7 percent, with Spain following at 10.3 percent and France at 2.2 percent. Germany, however, experienced a 2 percent decline in bus sales. Conversely, new truck registrations in the EU fell by 6.3 percent, reaching 327,896 units. This decline was mainly driven by an 8.5 percent drop in heavy-truck sales, although medium-truck sales saw a 5.6 percent increase.
Among the four major markets, Germany, France, and Italy saw declines in truck registrations of 6.9 percent, 2.9 percent, and 0.7 percent, respectively, while Spain recorded a notable 12 percent rise. Diesel remained the most popular choice for new van buyers in 2024, with registrations increasing by 10.5 percent, maintaining a dominant market share of 84.5 percent. Petrol van sales rose by 3 percent, stabilizing at a 6 percent share.
In contrast, electrically chargeable vans saw a 9.1 percent decline, reducing their market share to 6.1 percent from 7.2 percent the previous year. Hybrid-electric van sales also fell by 4.8 percent, accounting for 2 percent of the market. Diesel trucks continued to dominate the EU truck market, making up 95.1 percent of new registrations, despite a 6.2 percent decrease. Electrically chargeable truck registrations fell by 4.6 percent, but their market share remained steady at 2.3 percent, with notable increases in Sweden, Italy, and Germany, while France and the Netherlands experienced significant declines.
